Solved: How to reset and extend Windows operating system trial period up to one year
This issue is NOT only effecting me. Others have been able to reproduce the problem. I will structure my issue below in what is hopefully an easily readable and understood format. As far as I understand, this should not interfere with the initialization of the evaluation license of LTSC.
Troubleshooting Already Attempted. Response is along the lines of “that installation ID is invalid”. No problems, Windows reports 90 days remaining on the trial on the desktop, evaluation functions as expected. Therefore, I believe the problem is not with my hardware or process.
A friend attempted to install LTSC on their own hardware using the same procedure outlined above, and resulted in the same outcome for them. Therefore, the problem is effecting multiple users. I’m trying to evaluate software. In looking through the forums for this particular issue, I came across a thread from [4] which outlines nearly identical issues. The problem that users were having in with Windows 7 Enterprise Evaluation was that the default evaluation product key on Microsoft’s activation servers had expired, and so when Windows 7 Enterprise Evaluation attempted to initialize, it returned the same error that “The activation server has determined the specified product key is blocked”.
The solution was for somebody to communicate internally to Microsoft and ultimately get the default evaluation product key permitted for use again. I strongly suspect that since LTSC is such an uncommon OS to use, let alone evaluate, it has been forgotten to renew the product key for its evaluation to initialize properly. Again, I believe the issue is specifically a problem with Microsoft’s own activation servers. I hope that my description of this issue has been thorough enough to facilitate some support from Microsoft engineers capable of addressing this problem.
I’d like to emphasize that I am trying to evaluate software for use in my company, and that said evaluation is not functional ; I am reasonably confident this problem is through no fault of my own, and is an issue entirely contained on Microsoft’s activation servers. I encourage you to try and reproduce my issue by installing Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC Evaluation as outlined above, and that should further clarify that this is not a self-contained incident. Thanks for what you have done for this case. Due to limit condition, so far there is no way to reproduce your scenario to reproduce the failure. I have attempted to reinstall it multiple times since that first install, and all attempts have yielded the same problematic result. Also, a friend of mine followed the same procedure on their own hardware, and the first time they installed Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC Evaluation they too were greeted with the text “Windows license has expired” on their desktop.
It is worth noting, however, that my friend did not check everything that I have, such as with slmgr or waiting to see if the system shut down after an hour but I have no reason to believe it would behave any different, given the expiration notice on the desktop. It is additionally worth noting that I have also tried installing Windows 10 Enterprise non-LTSC Evaluation multiple times, and that it successfully initialized the evaluation every time, not just on the first install.
In regards to your comment on reproducing the failure, would you be able to describe what your limitations are? What is the download location for the ISO that you used? Sometimes there are multiple locations and one could be corrupted so I would like to know where you downloaded it from. Where did you get the product key or was it the one embedded in the ISO? A blocked product key should not expire evaluation period, a blocked product would be a separate issue, this was working when my contacts tested so thus the questions about the product key above.
The evaluation timers are not tied to the product key activation. Once the system is expired, if I recall the rearm should no longer work so that is expected behavior, at least on client. I would have asked to check the certificates had not expired on the system, but since I had people install this at Microsoft successfully I don’t think that is the issue. However it is equally concerning, as I have been able to reproduce this issue on my end countless times, as well as a friend being able to reproduce it on their own hardware.
The final digits of the product key are: 6JHWR. This is the product key embedded in the evaluation ISO. Up to this point I have only tried using Rufus. The operating system will shutdown every hour.
I did not see anything referencing “license” or “expired” in the System Logs; mostly automatic driver installations and Windows updates. Let me know if you would like a dump of all System Logs and 60 Application Logs to look through them yourself.
In regards to those who have been able to successfully run the evaluation, I’d be curious to know if there are any other differences in their setup process. There isn’t much variability available in the installation process, but I set all the settings in the privacy menu to their “off” state, I decline Activity History, and I choose not to sign in with a Microsoft account “Domain join instead”.
My language is English US , as is my keyboard layout. Did you read the Preinstall Information? I was looking for the entire System and application event logs, preferable somewhere I could download them. I forgot to mention that I think they disabled phone support for the evaluation version which is why that did not work.
KMS is not used by the Enterprise Eval version or any Eval editions, so it doesn’t matter whether one is available or not. I have the same problem, as you. Clicking “set up Windows with a local account” then takes you to the “Domain join instead” page. I then complete the installation using a local account. The article assumes that you have it, regardless the method you used to get it. Yes but it is an unhelpful article if the full Enterprise iso cannot be downloaded or otherwise purchased. But in this case, choose the option to Join a local Active Directory domain. And since you probably don’t have an Active Directory domain, Windows will prompt you to create a local account. Go ahead and do that. You can always switch to a Microsoft account after Windows is fully set up. That’s just a matter of launching the Settings screen, going to the Accounts category, and clicking the link to Sign in with a Microsoft account instead.
You now have 90 days to try out the Enterprise edition, which at this point will extend you beyond the July 29 deadline for upgrading to Windows 10 for free from Windows 7 or 8.
